I'm in love... with the Boro Restaurant!!! I can't even explain how good their food is but I'm sure going to try. Since our Anniversary falls exactly one week before Valentine's Day, the hubs and I decided to celebrate both over the weekend between the two. Tonight, he surprised me by suggesting we eat at Boro.
The one thing I love about Boro above other restaurants with gluten free options, is the fact that they have true gluten free options. Many restaurants masquerade their GF menu by taking regular menu options and removing things.
One of my biggest pet peeves is for a restaurant to say something like "We offer a gluten free bacon cheese burger, but remove the bacon and the bun." If you take away the bacon and the bun, it isn't a bacon cheese burger. Its a meat patty on a plate.
Or if they offer you BBQ ribs, but leave off the BBQ sauce. My favorite is when because it is GF, they try to charge you extra. So, what you're saying is that because of the label you're going to charge me double but give me half the food.
When a restaurant has succeeded is when they offer true GF options. Delicious meals that when cooked, in tact, are truly GF. Boro has mastered this. I don't know who they have managing their kitchen, but that person (or people) are GENIUS!
For an appetizer, my husband and I shared - yes SHARED - the Chimichurri Shrimp. Let me explain why that is so significant. When we go out to eat, there are almost never any GF appetizers that are appealing or interesting, so I usually don't order and then watch him eat his gluten filled appetizer while drooling.
So, the Chimichurri Shrimp... It is a half dozen shrimp sauteed in a pan with cilantro. It is layed on a bed of pico de gallo with black beans. They place a stripe of the delicious chimichurri sauce across the top and then sprinkle it with cotija cheese (tangy like goat cheese, but made from cow's milk).
I, of course, pigged out, downing my three shrimps in seconds. Don't get me wrong, I savored every bite, but they went fast. My husband decided to eat one and save the other two to eat with his dinner - the Filet Mignon special that night, which was served with asparagus and served over a citrus risotto.
My main course was even more insane. My friends know what a foodie I am, so when I tell you this had a uniquely delicate flavor profile that had me stunned into silence, they know how good that is.
My dinner was pan seared scallops, which were served over layer upon layer of flavor. The bottom layer was pork belly, which was both tender and crispy at the same time. The outer edge of the pork belly had a nice crunch to it, but the inside was juicy and delicious. On top of the pork belly, was a large portion of bleu cheese risotto. As if that wasn't enough deliciousness, they added balsamic glazed, sauteed onion.
Every bite contained different layers of flavor and texture. It was divine.
Now, to top it of, the dessert stole the show. The last time we were at Boro, we had this vanilla creme brulee. So we asked if they had some. It was not on the menu, but the waitress, Lori, was able to rustle up two of them for us. We had an amazing, valentine's / anniversary, romantic dinner.
We love the Boro! Can't wait for summer when we can eat outside there.
